Mysterious Mountains of ...Mystery
|
Superstition Mountain, Arizona
Devil's Tower, Wyoming
|
Superstition Mountain is an enigma for me.
I remember visiting the mountain with my dad as a child, hoping to stumble across the Lost Dutchman's gold.
In my young mind it felt like we'd hiked all day when we crested the saddle and got a glimpse of the Weever's Needle.
It was exhausting and magical.
As an adult, I often wish I could re-visit my childhood.
I returned to the mountain with my children and hiked all day (waiting for the slower feet of children).
When we crested the saddle, exhausted, and saw the Weevers Needle I realized, "this is magic".
Devil's Tower is another of those magical keys. I didn't understand Close Encounters (as a child, or as an adult ;-)
but I thought the mountain the Dreyfuss character molded from mashed potatoes was amazing.
As it turns out, the real thing is astounding. As a child, I just wanted to see the mountain,
as an adult, I'd like to climb a route, explore the top, and look outward to appreciate the surrounding
landscape.
